Binta Kanteh
Binta Kanteh tells stories about identity, belonging, and the lives people build across borders.
A Minnesota-based freelance journalist and storyteller, Binta explores the people, ideas, and experiences shaping diaspora communities. As a Gambian-American, she brings a personal connection to this work and a deep curiosity about how people carry their heritage, navigate change, and make a home in new places.
Her reporting spans diaspora communities from Sudan to Vietnam, covering business, innovation, arts, culture, and immigration. Through these stories, she explores the connections between individual experiences and the broader forces shaping communities, introducing readers to the entrepreneurs, artists, advocates, and everyday people whose contributions deserve attention.
Binta’s work has appeared in the Center for Broadcast Journalism (Power 104.7), Sahan Journal, MPR News, and the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder.
At the heart of her journalism is a commitment to telling stories with dignity, depth, and care. She approaches diaspora communities as places of creativity, ambition, complexity, and possibility. Her work invites readers to look closer, question assumptions, and better understand the experiences of people whose lives may differ from their own.
Alongside her journalism, Binta is pursuing a master’s degree in Global Journalism at SOAS University of London, with a concentration in investigative and human rights journalism. This focus builds on the commitment that guides her storytelling: to illuminate overlooked experiences, ask meaningful questions, and give people’s stories the attention they deserve.
